Thanks. They were assembled from several exposures at 2 views to get a good
dynamic range and sampling for the full 360deg.
An HDRI on it's own won't illuminate a scene, so for this you do need
radiosity (or other methods, one of which I have been working on for quite
some time).
However, they also make good environment maps simply for background and
reflective purposes, using your own scene lighting. For this radiosity is
not necessary.
