oh, just a text editor, then?  Well, that's the right way, i believe.  But
you gotta have a good text editor.  Hint:  one that permits block select.
You select a whole block of text ( those separated from other blocks by a
whitespace line ) with a single keystroke.  Or several continuous blocks by
a numeric prefix to that keystroke.  Vim is one such editor and i believe it
comes with the Mac, since it's a Unix.  Unfortunately, vim is kinda hard on
newcomers but i'm sure there are many other powerful text editors out
there...
