Well, I followed the suggestions and the results blow me away! Radiosity on,
hall lights "yellowed". Also tweaked several textures and normals. The
walls still don't reflect the *exact* same highlight, but they're as close
as I'm going to get it this pass.

A few notes:
That's gotta be the most famous carpet pattern in film history! It's very
distinct, and it was the easiest part of the picture (simple geometric
lines snapped to guides in Gimp). The carving around the elevators is
supposed, in the movie, to be Navajo/Apache artwork that's themed
throughout the hotel. So I did that in monochrome in Gimp, drawing freehand
- and it happily looks just about primitive enough! - Then use as a
heightfield in POV.

The ball - surprised a die-hard Kubrick fan hasn't mentioned it yet. In the
movie, to the best I can recollect and concurring from what online synopsis
of it say, was a tennis ball (the same one Jack Nicholson is pounding off
the walls in his study earlier). Well, I mis-remembered it as a child's
ball at first, then decided I liked it better when I dug up what the real
ball was. This one looks like a child's ball - logical for the twin ghost
girls ("Come and play with us, Danny!...") to roll to the live child. Also,
it looks like the kind of ball you might see in the movie "Toy
Story"....which recycles this carpet pattern on the floor of Sid's house!
So I figured this would complete the circle...

Thank you all for your feedback!
