There is also some geometry in the backgroung that is hardly visible. So the
scene may be an example for bad economy...  The liquid with IOR and fade
colors also demand time. And the 12 x 12 area light plus the spot need some

I did the scene for me just as a CSG exercise. Didn't plan that everything
would last that long.

Both. Lit by area light and all textures are smooth - either plastic or
metal or glass.

Absolutely. At least the test tube rack should be in a different color.
Haven't thought about the tubes being in a different color. The countertop
would be looking better in a dark texture. Perhaps it should also have a
tile or brick texture. Or some scratches.

So, thanks for your hints!  I don't know if I'll sit down and work this out
in the near future as I'm playing around on an underwater scene now and
this is quite time consuming.
