You'd have to ask Tor for a full explanation, but from how I understand the
source, they are each defined by the intersection of one torus (tilted and
translated slightly from the axes of the object itself) and the hollow
toroid shell created by subtracting a small internal torus from a slightly
larger external one. (I hope that makes sense o.O)

I thought it was a clever method, it's part of why I liked the image...
