Oh, and just for fun, try adding a sky_sphere.  One that's not black.  I'll
wait here while you try that...

sky_sphere {pigment {color blue 1}}

So, uh... shouldn't the background still be black, or at least darker than
blue 1?  There really is something funny going on here.
