I remember seeing blocks like this upstairs in a gouvernment 
building, though they look very interesting and could really
be made to be an important feature of a living space, I've
only ever seen them in places where the designers didn't 
care what the place looked like. 

They'd be great for a partial wall surrounding an area in 
a back garden, something to stop the dog from escaping 
but doesn't block all the light from the back of the
house.
