I've had to correct them to see them too, you can put something like 
this in your global settings, but then it'll be too bright on the machine
that you're working on.

global_settings{
                ambient_light 1.5
                assumed_gamma 2.2
               }


This goes at the top of your scene just after the include statements,
a little bit of ambient light might even do the job.
