It's all done with an ultra_wide_angle camera with a 360 FOV. The
camera is then surrounded by various objects with differing rotations.

This particular one involved 2 renders of a cylinder matrix whose
"cross-points" are derived from a standard 3D cubic lattice plus
turbulence.
