I installed 3.6.1 (win xp pro) two weeks ago, it worked fine and there were
no problems. But since yesterday morning it crashes on startup - windows
exception. Repair installation, deinstall and install new didn't help.

The only thing that changed on my computer is the (automatic) installation
of the most recent 9 windows security updates for IE / Win XP.

Anything known about that?

Thanks, Axel

Ooops, sorry, didn't see that the same problem was posted on Sep 26.

I will try that way...

If you open a file in povray, close povray, delete the file and then open
povray, it will display as an empty file. But if you don't remove the file
but the folder where it is, POV-Ray crashes at startup. I think this is a
known bug.

Try downloading the beta version at http://www.povray.org/beta/. In that zip
file you will find a DLL. Place that DLL in your POV bin directory (rename
the one there first) and hopefully the problem will go away. You don't need
to install the EXE's.

While I guess in the meantime you've solved the problem by editing the
registry, the above procedure should protect you from it happening again.

(And for the record, I've never been able to replicate the crash here, even
though I take the exact steps mentioned to cause it. The new DLL now does its
own checks for file existance before asking the main editor DLL to open one).

I had the same problem. In my case I put some pov files into a zip folder. I
extracted the contents of the zip folder into a new folder an the desktop.
I double clicked on one of the pov files, POV-Ray started, I rendered an
everything was fine. Then I closed POV-Ray without closing the scene file
window first.

Because everything was in the zip file, I deleted the folder with the
extracted files and I didn't remember the name of the folder as I named it
only by typing randomly - something like "ljdfasdf".

Theses crashes also appeared earlier, but it was allways possible to rescue
3.6 by placing the pov files into the original path (e.g. desktop). But
today this wasn't possible because I couldn't recall the folders name.

So I downloaded the zip file and put "cmedit32.dll" into the bin folder and
POV-Ray startet properly.

But,

for people that may also have this problem -
Couldn't you make a download possible, where you _only_ get the dll ? Would
save a lot of download time.

Not to forget: My system is Windows XP home edition (with several
patches...).

 Yours,
 Bu.

know if you like somebody to upload anything of your software to a third
