Hail, everyone. I just had a couple of quick Moray/POVRay questions, and I
figure this is definitely the place to ask them. First off, I would like to
express extreme gratitude to everyone on the Moray team, Moray is a top
notch program. I am ashamed to admit that I have gone over 30 days w/o
registering, but I will, as soon as I have some money. Thankfully, it is not
crippleware, as hand coding an entire scene is.. well.. tiresome. I don't
mind (too much) doing the animation stuff by hand, but to hand code every
shape and texture... urk. OK, enough blabbing, time for the questions.

I downloaded and installed a few of the available plug-ins (City,
Galaxy, Columns) the other day, and as of yesterday, Moray wouldn't render
the scenes properly. For some reason, POV does a quick display of the last
rendered version, and returns an error.. "Continue Trace Error; Error
reading aborted data file" I am attempting to uninstall and reinstall at
this moment, and hoping that clears the problem. If anyone can help me
figure out why this happened, and how I can avoid a repeat, it would be much
appreciated.

My second question is if anyone knows if it is possible to minimize the
amount of stars in the galaxy object, to acheive a nebula type of effect.

If anyone wants/needs more info, please mail me.

There is a newsgroup on this server called moray.win that these
questions would be more appropriate in. The author of the program,
Lutz, visits there regularly and the creator of the plugins you
reference, Keith Hull, is also active there. In fact there was
a very recent discussion on problems with those plugins that you
mentioned so you may have the answer there waiting for you.

Good luck,

Apparently you had Moray set to tell POV to continue a previous
trace. You completed the previous trace, therefore when POV opens that
completed file trying to see where to pick it up from, it finds its
already complete, and can't continue it (since there's no place to
pick up from if it's already done).

To correct this, in Moray, select from the menu ...
Render | Render_Options

...and on the render options dialog, look near the top left corner of
the dialog box for the option "Continue previous render" and uncheck it
if it is checked. Failing this, try manually deleting the old image.

Thank you very much... That's what I get for playing with options I don't
understand.. My apologies for posting this here, everyone. I wasn't paying
attention to what newsgroup I was currently in.

I guess you're using Keith Hull's Moray plugin for the Galaxy Include File?
I can't say I know much about the plugin interface, etc. but I just might be
able to help with the Galaxy include file side of things: each galaxy object
actually consists of a main object (galaxy, nebula, major star) and a
cluster of secondary objects (stars, meteors or comets). If you just want
the main object you need to turn off the galaxy cluster objects - in the
include file this is done by setting the galaxy_cluster_name option to empty
quotes (""), so if you look for a similarly named option in the plugin
interface you may have some luck...

But rewarding. With hand coding you can make things that you can only dream
of with moray... :)
