I think this will also remove my codemax editor settings, which is not
funny.
  Isn't there another way?

Btw, hoe about explaining what kind of bugs are those? I have never heard
of a bump_map bug or a 4D-vector bug... It would be nice to know.

I've never messed with the Codemax settings, always used the default. I
don't see an .ini for the settings so perhaps it is stored in the Registry
and an uninstall is sure to wipe it. Don't know the answer to this one...

Smart thinking. Another thing I do is to 'zip' my Insert Menu texts into
an archive with pathnames and just overwrite on top of the newly installed
POV-Ray package. Your method avoids this extra step.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\POV-Ray\v3.1\POV-Edit

Think that may be the registry key to Export and then later Import, but
I have no idea if you'd be messing it all up. I'm no Registry wizard
(not even apprentice). Be aware there are other sub-keys listed within
that one too. Frankly I wouldn't touch it myself.
Looking at the DLLs it seems all goes into the registry alright. But
that's another guess of mine.

Run regedit and export the key:

My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\POV-Ray\v3.1\POV-Edit.

And merge it after you've instaleld the new version. This will save
your color settings, keyboard macros, files history and open files.

It should be nice that instead of having to mess with the registry I
could just install the new version of povray and that's it. If there is
a previous version, it could take the settings from there (instead of
overwriting them).

Actually, it seems it doesn't just overwrite the registry settings - it
completely recreates them !

As an experiment (to see if a re-install did, in fact, overwrite the reg
settings - I thought it didn't, but I wasn't sure) I renamed all the items
and sub-folders of the POV-Edit branch and then did a reinstall and my
renamed reg entries completely disappeared !!!

This is not very nice. Upgrading seems to be a painful process if you
want the keep your settings.
It seems that I will not upgrade to 3.1g...

You could backup your registry before installing and then restore it after
the installation. You can use the scanreg tool that comes with windows to
handle this task for you.
