I kind of guessed that after reading your message a second time...which
is why I posted a bit at the bottom about the difficulties in choosing a
standard video format.

Also Chis could we have a system whereby you can specify a certain number of
particles to be created at the start of the simulation in certain positions?

And while we are throwing mud around, for unknown reasons, messages from you
cause Outlook Express to display all future messages in extra-large bold
face non-monospaced type, despite the fact that I have it set to use
10-point Courier for displaying everything.

I have been thinking of something like this...maybe add_particle() and
delete_particle() functions which can be called for any declared
particle_system object, or maybe just a way to specify a set of
particles to start with.

You need to upgrade <smirk> to OE 5.5 because it seems that doesn't happen for
me.
Apparently Greg has a user defined font.
What's this about particles? j/k

The add & delete functions would be more flexible or perhaps the spline
thing could do this?

I don't understand what you have in mind...could you explain more?

I'm not really sure myself.
but perhaps as well as emmitters you could have volumes (defined by
different objects) where particles appear randomly with a spline
specifying the amount of particles created at each timestep. Also you
could integrate a probabilty pattern into this -
while nump <= maxp
1 Generate a random position inside the volume = pos
2 Find the probability that a particle will be created at pos (from
the pattern) = p
3 If a random number (0...1) <= p then create the particle
4 If the user wants to have maxp particles & not less do nump++ only
when particles are created
end

Oh, like an object emitter but with control of the probability that a
particle will land each point, using a pattern and a spline as a kind of
float_map?
