Hi Everyone-

First I'd like to say "Thanks" to the Povray team, Pov is AWESOME!

I am trying to get the UNIX version of povray running on a MacPro (Intel
Xeon). Povray compiles from source and generates images with no problem.
Running from Xterm it traces an image and prints out the ASCII image on the
Xterm screen. MegaPov also works with no problem. I prefer the UNIX
version but I can't get the X-Windows render window working.

I would like to get the Povray X-Windows Render preview working. I have
installed Apple's version of X-Windows and it runs Xclock and Xterm with no
problems.

The Intel version of X-Windows for Macintosh seems to have the header files
in the "Developer SDK" directories and not in the same place as they were
for the Power PC version. I have tried adding
/Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.4u.sdk/usr/X11R6/include/X11/
to the directories in "configure" but with no success.

Can anyone suggest somethig else to try?

When I configure Povray I get:

Libraries
---------
checking whether to enable static linking... no
checking for sin in -lm... yes
checking for asinh... yes
checking for vga_init in -lvga... no
configure: SVGAlib display will be disabled

checking for X... no <-------------
here is the problem.

configure: X Window display will be disabled
checking for installed supporting libraries... yes
checking for library containing zlibVersion... -lz
checking zlib.h usability... yes
checking zlib.h presence... yes
checking for zlib.h... yes
checking for libz version >= 1.2.1... 1.2.3, ok
checking for library containing png_get_libpng_ver... no
configure: libpng will be built and statically linked to POV-Ray
checking for library containing jpeg_std_error... no
configure: libjpeg will be built and statically linked to POV-Ray
checking for libtiff... forced by libjpeg
configure: libtiff will be built and statically linked to POV-Ray

POV-Ray 3.6.1 has been configured with the following features:
  I/O restrictions: enabled
  X Window display: disabled
  SVGAlib display : disabled

Type 'make' to build, and 'make install' to install all files in the
hierarchy
/usr/local

 Thanks

Did you try something like that?

# assuming sh-like shell
xpath="/Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.4u.sdk/usr/X11R6"
./configure COMPILED_BY=you --x-includes=$xpath/include --x-libraries=$xpath/lib

Thanks for your suggestion Nicolas. Unfortunately X is still not working for
me.

I was wrong about the location of the libraries and includes they are in
the same place as for the PPC version which works fine. I am using OSX
10.4.7 for Intel.

I did this:

# assuming sh-like shell (switched to sh)

xpath="/usr/X11R6"
sh-2.05b$ ./configure COMPILED_BY=me --x-includes=$xpath/include
--x-libraries=$xpath/lib

From config.log

===============================================================
POV-Ray 3.6.1 has been configured with the following features:
  I/O restrictions: enabled
  X Window display: enabled
  SVGAlib display : disabled

Now from XTerm Povray runs fine and builds a .png file but there is still
no preview in a new X_Window. There is still a scrolling ASCII display in
the XTerm Window.

Do you have any other ideas ?

  Thanks again for your help.

If you write "echo $DISPLAY" in xterm, what does it say?

Check that you have the DISPLAY environment variable set with
a sensible value. If not, try something like:

DISPLAY=:0.0
export DISPLAY

Thanks Nicolas-

$Display was :0.0

This site seems to indicate that my X-Windows install may be missing some
components:

http://xanana.ucsc.edu/xtal/x11.html

Because Povray in the main use for this machine I'm going to re-do all
installs and try again.

Povray is rendering properly and this is just a display problem so I can
work around it until I figure out a solution.

Thanks again for everyone's help.

CASE CLOSED!

Starting with a new machine (Mac Pro) with the factory installed software I
added the developer tools and the X-Windows package.

Povray would not display the X-Windows render preview but would render an
image out as a .png file. So Povray was working fine.

Here is what I did to get it working:

I reformatted my disk and re-installed OSX 10.4.7 for Intel including the
X-Windows package also installed the XCode developers Tools.

Povray for UNIX configured, installed and ran on the first try.

Apparently Apple's X-Windows installer misses some files if it is not run at
the same time as the system install.

Thanks again for everyone's help.

BTW The 2.66Ghz Intel Woodcrest rendered benchmark.ini in 22 minutes 41
seconds, quite an improvement over my 450Mhz G4.
