...so those of us who use non-linux unix won't be able to use povray?

Why not a source code release of the Beta?
Surely some more bugs would be found/fixed that way.

For the eighteen-zillionth time: because a source code release would defeat
the purpose of having beta versions stop working after a specific time.

Sure. And some people would begin to write patches right away,
against buggy code. And some other would remove the time-limit
of the beta, and distribute the resulting buggy program. And
more people would come and complain to the POV-Team.

I was not very happy about that when I first heard it, but
the above arguments have convinced me that, sadly, this is the
only way to go right now.

There'll be probably more bugs found once the beta is over and
the source available, and we'll then have 3.5a, ..., 3.5g.

Once again, this was addressed several times in povray.beta-test.
Perhaps a "Linux beta" page should indeed be put up, containing
such FAQs.

So those of us who use non-Linux unices won't be able to *beta-test*
povray.
Sad but true. See my answer to PoD post.

If you are using Sparc-Solaris, then you might get a beta-binary as well.
(Although I will most probably be providing it, it's not up to me deciding
when and how. Please be patient.)

By the way, I think I have access to an alpha machine as well...

As long as it doesn't involve Perforce, count me in :)

Ok Ok! I've read the FAQ posted in these groups now that they've been
posted.

I'm still not convinced but I'll shut up ;)

I received it a couple days ago, but I haven't gotten in front of my
email machine since before then, so I haven't been able to reply.
