I've asked around in the usenet groups and have had some
help, but not enough to get the thing working.

I need an off-line newsreader, and will go with leafnode and
slrn if I can get them to work.

What I think I need is a copy of someone else's slrn.rc
preferably with comments so that I know what's going on.

I keep getting the message that it's failed to initialize
the server.

Any help appreciated.

Also think I need the change the host name of my box in a
few other files that I can't find, Gnome tells me it can't
find the internet host (of my local machine) and says that
it may not work properly.

I've doen away with M$ completely and don't want to go back,
but at the moment this News problem is getting me down.

You should read the README that comes with slrnpull. It seems
pretty comprehensive. Here's what it says you need in your
.slrnrc, assuming you've gotten slrnpull working:

|Assume that the SLRNPULL_ROOT refers to the directory
|/var/spool/slrnpull. Then the following .slrnrc lines should be
|sufficient to tell slrn how to deal with the news provided by
|slrnpull:
|
| set spool_inn_root "/var/spool/slrnpull"
| set spool_root "/var/spool/slrnpull/news"
| set spool_nov_root "/var/spool/slrnpull/news"
| set read_active 1
| set use_slrnpull 1
|
|The 'use_slrnpull' variable must be set to 1 to tell slrn to post the
|file to the out.going directory. Also note that 'spool_root' and
|'spool_nov_root' must be set to the same value.
|
|In addition, it is a good idea to include the `hostname' and
|`username' lines, e.g.,
|
| hostname "your.host.name"
| username "your.user.name"

Thanks Ron I gave up with leafnode after a few days and got slrnpull to work
straight away.

I've got a hell of a lot to learn, I'm using the total submersion method,
I've deleted all the M$ stuff and moved over to Linux, it's a steep learning
curve, but I'm getting there

Peter this is no laughing matter, I havn't got it to view images in p.b.i yet,
and havn't even unpacked POV yet never mind get it running properly.

Hope I've got the headders sorted out now. Oh I don't know how to get out of
this editor?! I think I'm going to be stuck here for ever!
