Has anyone tried the 1.5mb compiled download from the site? I keep
getting garbage displayed on the screen, no 'gz' file. I'm using
Mandrake Linux which is to say Red Hat 5.0. Any suggestions?

OK, this may be a little long.
I installed POV-Ray 3.1g here on what is basically RedHat 5.2,
although I have stuff from every sources there is.
I use a PC.
I hope this reflects your situation.
Download povlinux.tgz to the directory where you want the
installation to take place : I recommend /usr/local/lib/ . There you
untar/unzip the file this way : tar -zxvf povlinux.tgz. This will
create one povray31 folder and place s-povray and x-povray in
/usr/local/bin/ . As this is a pre-compile the program is already
functionnal.
Now you'll have to do a little housekeeping. Read the file
README.linux to learn where to put certain files like the povray.1
man page.
Write some little .pov script and use the command :
x-povray -i "your_script_path_and_file_name" +d +p
It should do the trick.
To write you scripts I recommend the pov-mode of Peter or Mika (aka
Warp). Search this group for it.

OK, you use netscape. Therefore it's important to trick the automatic
unzip of the file. Best way is to use the right mouse button and choose
"save link as". This should do it. Otherwise you might see a the binary
code direct in netscape ... not very informative! :-)

Well, I didn't see the link he was mentioning, but it sounds like a case
of Netscape doing the right thing.
Often web servers will send a file with an unknown extension as
"text/plain". In these cases the browser is supposed to listen to the
server and treat it as text. Broken browsers (shuch as MSIE) would instead
violate the RFC and behave on inspection of the URL and hide the server
problem from the users.
Another cause would be if he was hitting an FTP site. In that case if
there were no mapping for the end of a file name, Netscape does not know
what to do with an asset.

then you'll see only existing files
sometimes it works
http://www.*.... change to
ftp://www.*....
have a nice hack
