It seems a lot of people here use Emacs. How much demand is there for
an officially distributed Emacs mode for POV-Ray? Not that I'm making
any promises...

Well, I should learn emacs soon anyhow. Count me in.
Hmm, I hate NS4.5 in linux, it can't remember newsgroups for me :-(

This happens to me only if I open Netscape *before* the line is
established to my ISP!
But I would call it a bug.

There already exists one... It's not complete, though, and it's a bit
out of date. It provides minimal syntax highlighting, automated
indentation, and completion for a restricted set of keywords.
I guess you should get in touch with the guy, since I have seen no
mention of any update for a looong time now. Maybe he'll handle it to
you so that you can update and publish :-)

I took the liberty to update and post it yesterday ;)
It's in povray.binaries.utilities
It' not complete and it probably needs a few extra enhancements, like
better syntax highlighting and a good check for all keywords (I don't
think I got all new ones into it), and atmosphere should be put back in
for backwards compatibility.
I named it v1.99beata1 because of the (probably) missing keywords.
Ohh, btw. I didn't ask for permission from the either the author or the
other ones that have done updates on it, but I hope noone get angry with
me for such an oversight ;)

Great, I'll fetch it right away.

Maybe you should warn them, even a bit late. Better than nothing,
and that would provide a means to keep in touch.
Roland.

I once downloaded the pov-mode.el and compiled it to pov-mode.elc, but
I don't have the slightest idea how to use it. Can anyone tell me?

This is actually very nicely documented in the pov-mode.el file.
-- excerp from my .emacs ---
(autoload 'pov-mode "/home/peter/lib/emacs/pov-mode.el" "PoVray scene
file mode" t)
(setq auto-mode-alist
(append '(("\\.pov$" . pov-mode)
("\\.inc$" . pov-mode))
auto-mode-alist))
(add-hook 'pov-mode-hook 'turn-on-font-lock)
(setq pov-indent-level '2)
(setq pov-autoindent-endblocks t) ;;Automatically reindents
else/end/break
(setq pov-indent-under-declare '2) ;;Try it! Tell me if you like it...
(setq pov-fontify-insanely t) ;;When it's non-nil, we fontify
*every*
;;Povray keyword. Careful!
--- end of excerp ---
Here is whats done:
the autoload line points emacs to the pov-mode file.
the setq...(append...auto-mode-alist) tells emacs that files ending with
.pov and .inc should use pov-mode.
the add-hook turns on font-lock (syntax highlighting)
The rest of the lines are variables that describes pov-modes behavior.

Um... I can't seem to byte-compile this file. I'm using GNU Emacs
20.3.1 on Linux. I can't seem to run it even without byte-compiling
either. Too bad for me, I guess.
