Hi all.
I'm trying to find a good application to paint 3d meshes in real time. I'm currently
building
meshes in Wings3d, then painting the textures in Gimp. I keep the mesh loaded in
PoseRay so that I
can get a general idea of how the texture will look before I export the mesh to
POV-Ray. Anyway,
I've tried Tattoo, but it's not quite what I'm looking for. Anyone have any other,
preferably
freeware, suggestions?

Hi Kyle
Stick with Wings. Load a simple model - a sphere. Don't highlight
anything, and RC the window, then hit > 'material'. You'll get a 'new
material' box in that window - rename it to what you want it to be. Play
around with the 'material properties' until satisfied, and then hit
'outliner' in the 'window' drop-down menu. LC some faces on the sphere and
THEN LC your re-named material in the outliner box > THEN RC that name, and
then hit 'assign to selection'. You will then have your material assigned to
those faces selected. Import the model into PoseRay, and it will show you
what you have done. EDIT those materials in PoseRay, and you *should* end
up with what you want.
I tried this for the first time recently, and I'm not 100% sure that
I've got the editing in PoseRay correct - although, I was certainly
satisfied with the way Wings handles the 'materials' side of it.
Hope this helps a little - just have a play... ;)
(I'm still learning this too, so if anyone has any useful pointers in
this direction with Wings, I'd be more than satisfied to learn them).

I've not tried it, but I understand that there's a way to "unwrap" a mesh
in Blender (which can import Wavefront obj files, which Wings can export)
so you can paint it with something like the Gimp or other similar tools.

I've got the materials figured out pretty well in Wings. I guess I should have been
more clear in
my original post on what I am currently doing and what I am looking for.
I am currently using the AutoUV feature in Wings to create a UV texture map, which I
then "make
external" from the outliner window. I then use a copy of the image as an overlay
layer in Gimp to
paint the texture that I want. I can then refresh the image map in Wings to see my
progress. I can
then use Gimp to create a bump map using the overlay that I created before, but I
don't know of any
way to quickly review the effect of the bump map until the finial render in POV-Ray.
After that, I export the object from Wings as a Wavefront (obj) file and open it up in
PoseRay. I
load the material map and bump map into PoseRay, then export to a POV-Ray scene. I
can then use the
objects that are exported in the POV-Ray scene to create a final scene.
What I'd like is a tool to 3-D paint the texture and bump maps. It's really time
consuming to go
back and forth between editing in Gimp, then refreshing in Wings or PoseRay to see the
result, then
going back to Gimp to edit. Wash, rinse, repeat...
Tattoo is such a tool, but it is very raw and I cannot seem to figure out how to
pre-load textures
that have already been created.
Hopefully, this is a better explanation of what I'm doing and what I'm looking for.

Ahh, yes. Blender, the powerful app with the wacky, frustrating interface. I've had
it installed
on my system for about a year now, but I've only given it about 1/2 hour of usage
time, due 100% to
its unconventional interface. Maybe I'll fire it up again and see what I can figure
out. Or, maybe
I'll just finally uninstall it. :-)

Try out 2.42 - I've found the user interface a bit easier, though it could
just be that I've gotten used to it, too. It does really get easier the
more you use it - but I'm still working through things like textures - I
tend to use wings3D and Blender in combination; I've found Blender doesn't
do so well with the type of modelling that Wings does (and vice versa).

Have you tried UVMapper? http://www.uvmapper.com/
but like every piece of software it takes time to gain experience. (That
says more about me that it does about software :-)

Now this, I'm aware of, but haven't tried yet. To be honest, when I read
about it, it put me off because I thought that it would be time-consuming.

I see. Yes, a quick way would be good. I too, have the same problem.

That's what I do. (Apart from using bump and material maps in PoseRay,
I usually edit the material file by hand and add bumps if needed).

Yes, I know what you're saying - it 'is' a lot of work, but for the
moment, I think that's all we've got.

Well, I've been trying to figure Tattoo out all day for you, and I still
don't have a clue! I'm thinking that maybe the non-trial version will allow
such a method, but I don't know. That program is SO weird! It seems at first
glance that it's the answer to all UV hassles, but, no, it isn't. There are
too many questions to be answered as in how to actually use it 'properly'.
You load a simple model, you play with it, and everything seems to be 'left
in the air' as to what to do next. I had quite a few bugs hitting me like I
couldn't get any brushes to show up with one particular (simple) model,
tried another model and then had this weird shape on the screen instead of a
standard brush. Had quite a few memory exception errors too. Shame really,
as it looks like it has real potential.

Yep. It works pretty well for creating the UV map, but that's about it. The same
functionality is
in Wings3d. It's called AutoUV. It's a tad confusing at first, but once you figure
it out, it
works very well.

I've never really got into Wings; Moray is my poison of choice :-)
If you want to texture meshes I can't help, sorry.
