Does anyone know where I can find the specification for the AutoCAD DWG file
format?

It is my understanding the the makers of autocad jealously guard that
format type and refuse to make it public for economic reasons. There
are a few 3rd party utilities that will read a .dwg file but I think they
are a reversed engineering byproduct rather than an officially supported
product. You might take a look at my recently published bookmark file in
the announcement group for some autocad related sites. You may find a
pointer to the info you seek but I have never seen it published.

If you would like to see one of these 3rd parties, see
http://www.opendwg.org/

You can also download directly a documentation:
http://wotsit.org/cgi-bin/download.cgi?dwg13_14

I downloaded a copy of the documentation, and I plan to have a basic
converter done sometime in the next few months.
