But only for a week. I'm staying with a relative in the states, then
it's back to the Virgin Islands.

Welcome back. Are you and yours okay?
Nasty weather back then. Hope you had an umbrella. :)

Hey!
I'm glad you're ok - I've been wondering, though the long silence is
understandable.
I hope you're able to recover from the storm at home, and stock up on any things
you need to take back, while you're on the mainland.
What's the status of things in the islands?
Communications, infrastructure (power, water), housing.... ?
Enjoy your stay, and welcome back :)

My status: Damage to my home was minor, but we had major damage to our
trees. No electricity, land phone, or Internet. We are using a
portable generator part time to run the refrigerator. Sprint mobile
really sucks; go with AT&T.
Island status: Widespread devastation. I estimate that about 1/3 of
homes lost their roofs; a few homes were totally destroyed. One housing
project had most of the walls blown out; it was featured on the American
TV program Good Morning America--or so I'm told. Electricity has been
restored to about half the island. The electric utility estimates that
90% of customers will have electricity by Christmas. I don't know the
status of land or mobile communications, except to say that AT&T
weathered the storms better than Sprint. Did I say Sprint mobile sucks?
In perspective, though, we are in better shape than Puerto Rico. I also
ran into someone from the Commonwealth of Dominica in Miami Airport, and
I was surprised to hear that even Dominica is in better shape than
Puerto Rico. (Lesson to governors and mayors: if you want anything from
President Trump, you need to steel up and kiss his ass, regardless of
how much he has dissed your state or territory.) And I wouldn't be
surprised if private donations from the Virgin Island to Dominica will
exceed the pittance that the USA government has allocated to all the
foreign islands combined.
Cruise ships are returning to St. Thomas, and we expect about half the
normal calls through December. Most of the hotels were badly damaged,
though, and most of the undamaged hotel rooms are occupied by relief
workers. Some hotels won't be ready for guests until 2019.
