I've got a new work laptop that doesn't have a DVD player. I'm looking for
recommendations for free DVD ripping software (don't worry I have an older
laptop with a DVD drive!). I've just picked up the Band of Brothers DVD box
set and as it's 15 rated it's not suitable to watch on the big TV with the
kids around! I've never watched the series, so no spoilers please!

If you just want to copy temporarily so you can watch on the laptop, and disc
space is no barrier, MakeMKV is probably the simplest free option I've found. It
can transcode or preserve the disc contents losslessly, and produces files that
can be played back in, say, VLC.
If you're on linux you can use 'vobcopy' to copy the disc contents, or even just
'dd' to image the discs to iso files, either of which can also be played through
VLC. These are command-line tools (dd is a general-purpose filesystem util).
If you want more control to re-encode something optimal in filesize/quality,
Handbrake seems to be the last word with the options it offers. It can rip
straight from the disc (I think) or it can read any of the results of the above
options.

Definitely worth watching. One of my favorite miniseries ever.
One thing I really liked was how each eposide had a different feel to
it, maybe thanks to each one being written and directed by different people.
Oh, and spoiler alert: They win the war ;)

I have used handbrake in the past (I'm on a Linux system, not sure if
they do a build for other platforms, never needed to find out), and it
does a good job.
MakeMKV is also good.
