So, anyway, her clothesline had been tightened many times over the years
since it was hung. Apparently, the loose end, which normally would have
been coiled up and hanging against the tree, had dropped and was lying
in the grass.
Then this happened:

I'm very, very glad no one was killed or mutilated.

Wow, very glad nobody was hurt. That could have obviously been very bad
indeed....

Indeed. It could easily have turned very ugly. It was only after the
whole thing was over that it began to acquire a certain, well, hilarious
quality.
Sadly, the lawn mower may never recover. The tree's OK, though.

But the rope. The Rope!
How is the washing line? :-)
It is a lesson in mechanics when these things get out of control.
Frightening, very very frightening.

I don't know the statistics but lawn mowers are just slightly less
frightening than chain saws while also being a whole lot more common and
more often used. Probably the highest total frequency of injury *
severity of injury of any non-weapon device in human history.
Well except cars of course.

LOL
Probably best the lawn mower doesn't recover, it's had quite the
adventure.

You don't need to be a shrink to know that it was suicidal to begin
with. After all, it grabbed a rope and proceeded to dangle from a tree,
didn't it?

That would explain a lot.

The clothesline has survived, shorter but wiser. The lawnmower, alas,
is still in hospital. After several transplants, it is still reluctant
to breathe on its own.
The surgeon has, at least, provided a loaner so my sister and her
significant other can finish mowing the lawn, before it takes over and
invades the house (since the Missouri April Monsoon has persisted into
June and shows no sign of abating; everything's very, very green, if a
bit stunted for lack of sun--except for the grass, which is becoming
decidedly belligerent).
