Not completely off-topic, since it could be used as render-fodder.

What? The full-size Blue Marble image of Earth is a few GB, isn't it?
Never did get back to playing with that...not as much point with Google
Earth available to do a lot more, though.

Caveat: the full-size, raw Blue Marble image was split into two
26400x26400(?) parts, one for each hemisphere, but even then most
programs wouldn't load it, even if you had the memory...it's been a few
years since I looked into that, though, and I now have a 64-bit machine
with quite a bit more RAM than I did.

They use equirectangular projection to map the sphere on a rectangle.

It's probably ok to use map_type 1 of povray to put it back on a sphere.

Notice that they remapped rgb to 3 infrareds: 22, 12 and 3.4 microns.

(Equirectangular is a family: x = lambda.cos(phi_1), y = phi
lambda & phi are longitude & latitude)

plate carrée is usual, with phi_1 as 0, and a picture ratio of 2:1
Indeed, if unstretched, the picture ratio is 2.cos(phi_1), so you can
always get back to a know phi_1 with a simple unidirectional scale.

Drat! I cannot get onto the jpl.nasa site but I did manage to find it on
the nasa site at a lower resolution.
http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/WISE/multimedia/pia15482.html
Also a Mollweide projection (I think)
http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/WISE/multimedia/pia15481.html
And an annotated one.

They call it Aitoff.

the difference might be subtle. And is it Aitoff or Hammer-Aitoff ?

(clue: mollweide & hammer-aitoff are equal-area projections)
