Have a look at old messages in povray.general, I think there's
something about error messages when opening the help file.

When I vote on the IRTC it takes me roughly 40 minutes to investigate,
consider and comment on a good image, some images only take 5 minutes,
but at say 40 minutes per image, at 100 images (about average), hey
that's 66 hours work. I read very slowly, and sometimes rerender the
images of entrants so that I can advise them on possible improvements
this can involve building macros and while loops where the entrant has
declared the same complicated object 100 times in their scene file
etc. Sometimes I need to go on the net to research the capabilities
of the renderer or tools that an entrant has used.

I wouldn't want to discourage anyone from entering the IRTC, but I also
wouldn't want to see a doubling of entrants per round, that'd lead to a
dilution in both the quality of the images entered and the quality of
the voting aswell.

       Thanks Ron and Steve,

     I completely understand now. I've had a look at pov.bin.images, so I
can understand what you are saying Steve. I think that all the images in
there are great. I quite liked the 'crappy' eye one. I'm not too sure if
this is a 'nice' term or not, though! :o)
I'm definately looking forward to the day that I can post one up, to see
what you all think of it. I have the imagination and the artistic skills
generally, but it seems I have a lot to learn before I even get that far.
    Thanks for your time.

                           ~Steve~

Posting to povray.general would be the best thing, most of the time
another
user can answer your questions about any error messages. Besides,
several
of the pov-team members are right here in these groups as well as the
TAG-team
(Technical Assistance Group)who volunteer their expertise in answering
such
questions.
I've never seen that error message. You might want to try re-installing
povray.

POV-Ray is free and the people who contribute(you can see who and how
many
at the end of the helpfile)donate their efforts. Noone is getting paid
so
we all do it for the enjoyment. The big prize is the admiration of
fellow
artists who truly understand the work that goes into making a nice
image.

Hi Phil, something very strange just happened. Before replying to you,
I went back into Pov-ray to check the error message again, and it's gone!! I
did shut down earlier on in the afternoon, and rebooted again about 2 hours
ago, I wonder if this had anything to do with rectifying the problem?

Yes Phil, I too, truly understand what it's all about now. I think that
it's great to join in with a group of artists that have these abilities.
Lets hope I can get up to the standards of what I have seen so far. It's
ace!

Can you believe this:
I have been visiting the IRTC since it has been around and I never knew
there were any tangeble prizes other than the recognition!

Halbert, forgive me. I take it you did not read the rest of my posts? I
am new to this. I do not know the difference between a cock and a bull. I am
computer illiterate! I even visited the POV- Ray site and thought the
competition was theirs! But no, I have been back, and to my horror, (not
really), the competition belongs to IRTC, (didn't know what it stood for!
Apologies IRTC).
Go to, www.irtc.org/sponsors.html and you will see 'why' I asked this
question, (at the bottom). Apparently, a sponsor dropped out, and I thought
that the *prizes* were too low for the effort that was put in to the images
that were there, (and we all know what 'thought' did, don't we?) This was
before I stupidly posted, without reading through ALL the other postees
posts, first.
I've learned a lesson, would you agree? :o)

I look forward to any advice that you may want to give me, in the near
future. Many thanks.

                                   ~Steve~

PS, The 'recognition' bit, *IS* prize enough. ;o)

Thanks Ryan, when I first heard about POV-Ray, it was on a link
somewhere deep inside the web, after searching through 'computer graphic's'.
This link pointed to the 'news.povray.org' forums, so at that point I had
not seen very many images.
However, I am fully au-fait with what can be achieved now, (IRTC). I just
think that it is a fantastic tool, and I want to be able to achieve some of
the standards that I have seen so far, I'll try anyway.
     All the best, ~Steve~

PS, and yes, from what I have read, everyone 'wants' to help everyone else.
I'm glad that I have joined a great 'phenomena'.
And I hope that one day I can help someone that is new.

Welcome!

I got an error when opening the POV-Help myself and it disappeared after
reboot, too. No problems since then.

Or me thanks, Marc-H. I'm really getting into this PoV-Ray now.
