I can't get any file created in 3.5 to run in 3.6. (I am using 9.2 on an
imac.) This is very easy to reproduce. See for yourself:
Make the basic file example from template 3.5 menu (the beach ball).
Save it in 3.5. Open 3.6 and attempt to render the scene in 3.6. Get the
following screwy error messages:
Cannot process command-line at '' due to a parse error.
This is not a valid command-line. Check the command-line for syntax
errors, correct them, and try
again!
Valid command-line switches are explained in detail in the reference
part of the documentation

Output file: OBJECT.tga, 24 bpp Targa

Tracing Options

Possible Scene File Parser Initialization Error: Could not find file
'OBJECT.POV'
Scene File Parser Initialization Error: Cannot open input file.
Now here's the kicker...
Make the basic scene file from template in 3.6 and it will render. No
visible difference between files.Nothing appears in the commandline
blank in the gui in either case. (None were added!)
So... what's going on? Wetware or software problem?

It is very possible that if the render settings of a file are corrupted that
you have garbage in there that a text edit field cannot display or that
there are multiple lines in the text edit filed (a Select All and a Clear
will remove everything inside). Unless the "Set" popup menu says "Default",
the settings are not the default!
