It is very possible that if the render settings of a file are corrupted that
you have garbage in there that a text edit field cannot display or that
there are multiple lines in the text edit filed (a Select All and a Clear
will remove everything inside).  Unless the "Set" popup menu says "Default",
the settings are not the default!
