I'm about to buy a new home computer, does Povray usually work with Windows 10
(home or pro) out of the box? Is there anything particular I should watch out?
I don't have much time to play with Povray but I keep coming back to it so it
would be a bummer if I couldn't use it on a new machine.

It works on ANY version of Windows. Also exist for Linux and MacOS.
Hardware preferences :
As much RAM as you can. Aim for low latency over burst length.
POV-Ray is CPU heavy. Get the best CPU that you can afford.
Video : Discrete video card, but the cheapest entry level will do.
POV-Ray don't use the video card for anything else than to display the
interface and the rendered image.
Disks : Any will do.

You haven't mentioned your target price or the primary purpose of the
machine.
The most important thing to me is CPU. I have a middling 6-core i5 that
is faster than my more expensive 4 core i7. I like that one a lot. I
wouldn't go less than an i5 if you can afford it.
Everything to me is secondary after that (for POV-Ray).
If you want to game, you need at least a $100 video card.

Running POV on a Win10 machine here with zero issues. CPU is a Threadripper
1950X (16 cores), so far been great! With a liquid cooler the temperature caps
at 68 Celsius and stays there, very happy about it. 32 GB RAM, no over-clocks,
not risking any stability, and - as I'm also playing a lot - a Radeon Vega 56.
Except that by the time of writing this the card is showing signs of breaking
down. :( But, already ordered an RX 5700 XT which should arrive in a couple of
days. \o/

Issue is I couldn't get 0 down time on win10 - maybe it got better.
Nice and quite around here. or preordered file system. or programs that use
certain folders. or locked-out files, even DOS can't save you. lol. yuck.
on the bright side ... everything is made for windows.

Thanks everyone glad to hear it works. I'll likely have to settle for a
compromise but I've been poving with my old Windows 7 machine so anything will
be an improvement.
I can only hope Moray will work. I've also used Bishop3D with Povray I doubt it
will work on Win 10. If they both fail I'll have to find a different modeller.
Wings 3d or maybe Blender.

Wings3D is certainly a good choice imo, as is Blender of course. I
myself am using Silo. No freeware, but at an affordable price.

One thing you should do is log in as admin to install POV-Ray. Do not
use "Run as..." or "Run as Administrator" (unlike nearly every other
Windows software). You need to actually log out of your regular user
account and log in as admin.
I also suggest putting the include files in the Public user folder.

Public user account, rather. The exact folder path is going to vary.
