Hi folks,
Ben from UnchartedX has just posted the stl file from a professional
metrological scan of a pre-dynastic rose quartz vase.
You can view the video and the one that precedes it to gain an appreciation of
exactly what this represents.
From a purely POV-Ray perspective, it would be great to get this rendered with
Thomas deGroot's Granite_21 textures, and maybe even post the results on YT and
other sites to show the capabilities of POV-Ray with regard to texture, finish,
normal, lighting, and sub-surface light transport.
The file is 44.6 MB, and it would be great if someone could convert it to a mesh
{} or preferably mesh2 {} object. You could likely post it on a free
file-hosting service for the next 30 days like I did with F. Lohmueller's
(partial) web archive.
https://unchartedx.com/site/2023/02/19/new-video-updates-to-the-vase-scan-responses-and-the-stl-file/
Thanks,
Bill "Bald Eagle" Walker

intrigued. my "home made" mesh2 .inc file requires 117M formatted, and 99M with
leading whitespace and separating commas removed. where does the extra 12M
saving come from? can you post (or mail) a copy of your mesh, please?
the granite look does suit.

HI, Thomas.
Very good job ! Looks very natural, texture is high-detailed. When you
finish the scene, could you please send it to me ? I will do HD
animation and put it on my Youtube's POV-Ray channel.
All the best,

Well that certainly put a smile on my face.
I was trying to get to sleep, and I started (continued) thinking,
"He's not going to be able to resist doing it...."
And sure enough - converted, textured, and rendered. :D
Thankfully, it's a mesh, and we can instantiate 30-40,000 of them to show how
easy it was to just bang these out with some sand and copper tools in our
copious amounts of uninterrupted free time without the need for a pesky lathe.
;)
'tis really a beautiful texture.
Thanks - off to shovel snow.

As you say. I was also thinking about those Egyptian craftsmen. I wonder

You do have Granite_21.mcr on your system, don't you?
I have made a small update to it, which makes it possible to call
texture{Granite_21} instead of material{Granite_21}. It is not entirely
ready to be posted yet though. Just don't uncomment the (new) Mat_Tex
command.

To be sure you get it too (I posted the link separately to jr's
request), the Vase mesh2 files can be downloaded here for the next 30 days:
https://ufile.io/0wv5jpfc
I still need to test how sub-surface light transport will show itself
off in the present setting.

it's all v subjective, of course, but I think this image "best" of the three,
think the difference of the top surface alone made it worth having.
re the mesh. looks like either of the s/wares you used did some optimisation
(of vertices). luckily the "geom" file contained a very useful header, I used
that to have a few tries with the (gts) 'cleanup' utility, and got down to 55M
without any apparent/visual differences. hope to find some more time over the
weekend, see how small it can be made. (thanks)

Interesting. I have no idea what those conversion programs are doing

According to this site:
https://www.theglobaleducationproject.org/egypt/articles/hrdfact3.php
The grain size of the stone looks more like the example attached here.
However, all depends on the /real size/ of the objects themselves, and
most seem to be on the scale of inches/centimetres.

I like how it looks, but don't you think that little bit more light at
the bottom will enhance perception of material and shape ?

Here it is. Also increased the light intensity a tad (personally, I
prefer the darker version where the surroundings are less visible)
The optimised mesh has the same quality as the 'heavier' one. Well done!

I like how it looks now, but this is your project - your rules :)
And don't you think that it's time to animate it now (putting on
turntable first) ?

cheer away :-) link to 6.1M zip, 17M mesh. looks unchanged, afaict. (started

Very good.
I did my transformations (on the original converted OBJ files) in
Poseray, centering and then rotating the vase, and dropping it to y=0,
/before/ exporting to POV-Ray.

In my studio set-up I used trace {} to put the vase on the 'pedestal'.
The 'base' of the vase effectively is situated at y=0 in the geometry file.
//Bounding Box....... from x,y,z=(-1.8839052,0,-1.7086791)
// to x,y,z=(1.8823464,4.72023337158,1.6314062)
// size dx,dy,dz=(3.7662516,4.72023337158,3.3400853)
// center
x,y,z=(-0.000779399999999986,2.36011668579,-0.0386364499999997)
// diagonal 6.90082777701024
And the same from the 'optimized' version (note that for some reason,
the size is much larger. yesbird?):
//Bounding Box....... from
x,y,z=(-14.3452792176383,-3.5527136788005E-15,-12.7048841803871)

Yeah - I did an intersection to slice it in half, and was wondering what all
that was about. Might be just poor mesh structure due to conversion from a raw
point cloud / stl-obj-pov .... ?

I didn't play a lot with Poseray once I got the file converted.
I wanted all the subsequent processing to be done in a way that's easily traced
(SDL) and preserved the raw data. But the sweet textured renders of the
processed mesh are nice and really show the results possible with POV-Ray and
granite_21 :)

Did you do your transformations by eye/feel?
My -z rotation was based on some trace() results on the lug handles, followed by
some atan2 () hocus-pocus that I'm calling good-enough for now.

The bounding box that Poseray assigns to the vase seems fine heightwise, but
overly wide, so getting it to sit at y=0 was fairly straightforward.
I'm wondering what Poseray and Meshlab, and even Matlab have for mesh-feature
analysis tools.
I'm guessing that Polyworks has all the pricey bells and whistles for
identifying such features and fitting planes, spheres and cones in a
least-squares best-fit fashion to a model.
Maybe I need to slice the vas at the lug handle hole and inspect the mesh at a
high magnification to see why I'm not getting good trace() results.

No. I let Poseray give me the necessary values and acted on them.

You think so? Once rendered, I do not see any significant width
difference compared to the STL original.

Just wondering: did you try to trace the model while still on its side?
I have not been trying that so I wouldn't know indeed about bounding box
issues there.

Perhaps ZBrush does rescale while importing and/or optimizing, in any
case applying 'scale' before rendering should not be a problem, I suppose.

in the stl data, I guess. although TdG uses different OS and tools, both meshes
have the same "shadows".

I guessed that to be the case indeed, and no, it is not a problem by
itself. However, it is good to be aware of this especially if the goal
is to recreate a 1:1 scale model.

I forgot to mention in my earlier comment that in Poseray I generally
start (in the Groups window) on a new model:
1- 'Weld vertices'
2- 'Remove orphan vertices'
3- 'Recalculate normals'
without changing 'Crease angle' or 'Tolerance'.
If stray vertices exist, the bounding box may thus be improved.
Then, I do the transforms I deem necessary for my subsequent use in
POV-Ray. Poseray is very efficient for this although you may have to
play a bit with the application before you get it right.

Update:
A link to this detailed analysis of the vase has just been posted.
https://unsigned.io/granite-artifact/
I'll be out to work and then doing things this afternoon, but maybe if others
are interested, they can read, play with it, write some macros and scenes, etc.

Ok. I used this to apply to the vase in my studio setup.
1- I converted inches to centimeters
2- I used the following code by Alain to scale the vase to POV-unit scale:
http://news.povray.org/povray.newusers/thread/%3C60c8e000%241%40news.povray.org%3E/
3- I scaled the object the object to Real World sizes
The result is attached. Note that the grid on the pedestal is a 1 meter
square corresponding to 1 POV-unit. Subdivisions in 10 centimeter
squares. The grid was applied as an object pattern to the texture of the
pedestal.

Somehow, I am snowed under by all the messages on miscellaneous subjects
lately (and other matters) that I must have missed your contribution. :-/
I added the granite_21 texture and got this. Indeed, the mesh is as
smooth as the earlier/heavier ones.
So, what does it say about the /need/ for POV-Ray use of such a 'heavy'
mesh? I guess that for most cases we could do with less. It is a pity
that Poseray does not allow for simplifying meshes, only subdividing it
further (afaik).

had not realised earlier that a scale-correct 1:1 representation is the goal.
but in light of that, I'd argue that while it's a WIP, the highest possible
resolution, then scale down for use. (much like oversizing a render (gut
feeling))

Well, there is no specific goal afaiac, except if one wants to use
Granite_21 in a 'natural' way, then it might be important. However, that
is a choice and all options are free of course. ;-)
...and when we want to reproduce the object at its true size/aspect.

Well, there are different goals at different stages.
The first goal was to rapidly get a very nice looking render with the Granite_21
material to show off POV-Ray's textures and the potential for
near-photorealistic render quality.
The second is to poke around the mesh and examine whatever features may present
themselves, given that we have a very high quality mesh, and the tools to play
with normals, lighting, signal processing, trace (), and anything else you can
think of.
Here's a sort of uv-unwrapped render of the outer and inner surfaces, done with
trace (), 2 arrays, and 4 million triangles. I still need to correct the
scaling and positioning of the lower color_map. <eyroll>
