Judging from their demo pictures with really crude polygon models this
seems quite a joke. Maybe they should start using Povray. ;-)

It's the terrain that's important, and how they're accomplishing it...
The animals etc are just window dressing.

The terrain is at least as crude as the animals.

We're obviously not talking about the same program.

I mean the demo pictures like:

http://www.emg.fr/scaper/demo/EINGANA008.JPG

where the lack of detail in geometry is very well visible. The textures
try to hide this a bit of course.

Consider how those pictures are generated. That isn't a 'set up scene
then render it', it's a 'realtime display this' thing. And it's able
to do the entire planet.

Their description says:

"The whole Earth defined with an accuracy to within 1km
200m for Europe and the U.S.
10km for Ocean's floor."

Which is about what's available for free today.

And after all this is a group about Povray so i'm comparing things with
those available in Povray and this is less than what was technically
possible in Povray 5 years ago.

Not only that, they seem to have missed their release date by five months.

did you check out the videos? Those seemed pretty good to me-
assuming no fakery going on.... to have that much detail at ANY
place you go would be pretty good.
