Anim8or is a freeware program for modelling meshes (also for animating
them).
It imports .3ds, .lwo, .obj files and exports .3sd and .obj.
For those who use it:
There is a minor update, V0.81, on the download page. It fixes a few
annoying problems that are present in v0.8. The main changes are:
* Fixes some rendering problems and crashes for Figures, particularly those
using bump maps.
* Fix minor fog rendering problems, and add Radial fog to renderer.
* Add control over distance of near clip plane.
* Compute camera FOV properly when set by users.
* Increase maximum size of rendered images to 4K by 4K.
* Fix bug where "edge creased" property wasn't saved to .an8 files.
* Fix .3ds export bugs that caused MAX to reject some files with "Improper
File Format" error.
For all the rest, if you wanna try it...

Hi Txemi,
I tried Anim8or a while back, and was impressed with what it could do. I
didn't continue with it because of its lighting limitations (no shadows).
What I liked about it was the ease with which you can bend and distort the
shape of objects with it. I would like to be able to animate bends and
distortions of shapes. Is there any way to do an animation with Anim8or,
doing things that are not possible with Povray animation, and then export
that animation into Povray to get the desired realism with the lighting?

I really don't know. I've never tried to animate anything in Anim8or.
I only use it for modelling purposes (exporting it later as .obj file and
using poseray to generate the pov and udo files).
Anyway there are tutorials in its website, and also the manual
has a chapter related to animation.
I don't know if 3DWin can export the animation information
contained in a .3ds file.
If anim8or stores that information when saves a scene to
.3ds format, that will be the way (though I may be wrong
with 3DWin...).
Besides of that, there is a little app for Hamapatch called
Tweener that is an external program by Brian Black that takes the
first and last key frames of an animation sequence (in exported
POV-Ray format from hamaPatch) and creates the specified number
of inbetween POV-Ray frames by manipulating the bicubic patches
of the exported hamaPatch model.
