Here is the source code I currently have. Some of the patches are
unfinished(especially transparency), there are a few pieces of
experimental code commented out, and some of the things are for planned
patches(like some stuff in tokenize.c and parse.h to reserve tokens).
There is documentation included, I will work on some more descriptive
documentation. If you have any questions just ask them in
povray.unofficial.patches.
This patch is based in part on WyzPov source code, credit for the
blurred reflection, angle-dependant reflection, etc goes to Mike Paul. I
just modified it to use patterns and my own syntax(which is still in the
experimental stage). I also borrowed a lot from his reflection blur code
to add blurred transparency.
Credit for the trace function goes to Ron Parker, of course. The
image_pattern is from Nathan Kopp's UVPov. Let me know if I forgot
anyone. :-)
I am debating whether to move to the Superpatch source or to stay with
official POV, I am currently leaning toward using the Superpatch. Any
suggestions?

I would go to the Superpatch code.
There are more stable new features there
than anywhere else. And when POV 4 makes
its arrival (long after POV 3.5 I think)
there will be another large learning curve
for anyone that wants to add patches.
So, stick to the "latest, greatest" version
of patches, the Superpatch. I think it will be
with us at least till POV 4.0

I think that the Superpatch and its concept will never dissapear as long as
POV lives. It is where all the new ideas and features to be added are
tested, bug fixed, and abused ahead of time. It serves a useful purpose and
to me it represents a sort of beta testing of the official POV-to-come. Long
live POV! Long live the SuperPatch! Long live the dedicated programmers that
make both possible!

Is there actually already any date that POV 3.5 or even 4.0 are supposed
to be released?

No, the POV-Team does not give release dates. They used to but ran into
problems with releasing v3.0 on time and got a lot of flak from the users.
They refuse to even discuss it anymore. Can't really blame them either.

Nope. But I'd be interested if it comes in 2000 or 2010... Or do it the
other way round: "It comes christmass" (but which isn't told...)
