Have a look at the vfaq maintained by Warp.

This could be the max_trac problem:

Yep, almost no doubt about it, a lot of inline refraction/reflection going
on there.
I absolutely love this image, worth the wait. Simple, yet textured well.

Reflective object above a checkered plane :-)

Nice looking object but the background is beautiful, it reminds
me of something, I can't think what.

Keep up the good work. Sorry can't help you with the problem you
mention in your post, but I'm sure there are many here who can.

Cheers
Steve

Very groovy image - I don't why, but it makes me think of the "Tree of
Life".

Max_trace should definetly fix this. If, however the final result is not
what you were looking for by adjusting your max_trace - you could just
isolate that one sphere. I'm guessing that you are using a loop to form
the necklace - so if you adjust the code to place all but that one
sphere - then code the sphere into place (seperately) and reduce it's
reflectivity and diffusion (maybe also adjust the ior if you're using
it) - that might solve the problem without affecting the rest of the
scene. ;-]

Wheee... Striking... goodlooking... great....
The square thing is from light-sources and internal reflection... or is it
max_trace_level ?

Well, if you get problems with max_trace_level crasuhing in windows, try the VC6
compile... it has more stack memory.. *laughs*

(I'm the one to ask for more :-)

It could be a MAX TRACE LEVEL thing
