Maybe this helps to illustrate the problem.
I differenced the images in photoshop and raised the contrast.

OK, I'm just taking a guess here since I just spent a lot of time trying to set
gamma stuff up right - make sure the "display_gamma" and "file_gamma" settings
in your POVRAY.INI file are correct (probably 2.2), and your monitor is adjusted
properly. I'm no expert in this regard but that's something you should check.
The gamma stuff built into POV-Ray is really useful but HAS to be ajusted
correctly.

And make sure you add the line "assumed_gamma 2.2" to your scene file...

I think the best photorealistic combination is:
 1 .- "assumed_gamma 1" if you have a calibrated monitor to the sRGB standard.
 2 .- inverse gamma correction to color and texture if needed. This has been
automated with the keyword "srgb".

Yup. For photorealism that's the way to go.

(Dave's recommendations for Display_Gamma and File_Gamma still hold though.)
