Hello,

Recently I was working on a bullet object and my wife thought it looked kind of
like lipstick. She's my greatest critic. But she liked the idea of a lipstick
wallpaper for her computer so I made this for her. The actual lipstick texture
is the "Metallic paint texture" by Jaime Vives Piqueres. This texture is so
great that it makes the image much more interesting all by itself and provides a
focal point, in my opinion. Thank you Jaime for sharing it.

Any comments, suggestions, or criticism is always welcome!

Regards,
Dave Blandston

I meant to mention one thing: the reflections on the table show specular
highlights on two of the round black objects that appear to run along the entire
height of the objects, but the hightlights aren't actually visible on the
objects themselves, only in the reflection. Hmmm...

Ha ha! POV-Ray is helping me explore my feminine side. It was actually a lot of
fun to make the lipstick case with the square base. I'm still working on better
lighting to show the black plastic parts better.

That's the table reflecting highlights caused by light coming from overhead.

Highlights of the same brightness should also be seen on the original,
caused by light coming from below that is being reflected by the table;
however, that's a light path POV-Ray can't simulate without the use of
photons (with the table as photons target).

Yes, that fixed it - much better. Thanks again! It's nice to be able to
experiment with photons and dispersion and other "slow" features using version
3.7.

Don't use true black for your black, but a very dark gray like rgb 0.01
to rgb 0.07. True black don't realy exist exept as an abstraction.
Add some small amount of reflection if you don't already do.

How about some subsurface scattering as well on the lipstick?

Here's the final version. Thank you very much to Alain and Nekar Xenos for
suggestions. I would like to add subsurface scattering but I'm going to have to
spend some time learning how it works. All I could find was the sample scene
that comes with the beta version, but I couldn't adapt it to this scene very
well. I'll work on it...

Really well done. A nice 're-purposing' of the bullets--beauty vs. war.

My only suggestion would be to roughen-up the angled slice of the lipstick
somewhat (perhaps by differencing a somewhat-bumpy height_field from it.) It's
perfectly smooth and sharp right now--like a cosmetics advertisement--but needs
to look a bit 'rounder,' at least on the edges. Not that I would know about
such things, of course... :-O
