I had some vague notion that it helped with sample distribution, but it
was likely my imagination.

Gotcha.  I was shooting for more defined shadows than I got, so I didn't
really want to average them out too much.

Thanks, I'll bet this isn't helping.  It didn't seem right, but I didn't
really know where to go with it.

Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it.  I usually put all the options
in there deliberately, even though its often redundant.  My memory of
the defaults is fuzzy, so I like to be sure I know exactly the value I'm
using.  I also like to see all the values, for me it makes it easier to
tweak them around.  Lastly, I think some part of my personality
distrusts default values =)

When I say that you can skip a parameter with default value, I never sayd that 
you /must/ keep those set at default value. If keeping those help you, then keep 
them.
