Ah, Caillebotte! Such a fascinating painter!
Interesting to observe how the strippers are doing their job: first 
stripping the joints between planking, then the individual planks. This 
might be dictated by the planks being not perfectly flat I assume...

And perhaps the need for a separate tool?  Caillebotte probably just 
interested in the bold pattern created.  It's a wonderful picture to 
contemplate the potentials of the finish {} statement.  I just realized, 
it's genre interest is 'right down your alley,' isn't it!

Absolutely right!

While Caillebotte was certainly interested in the pattern created, I am sure 
that he also recorded faithfully the technique used. It was that which 
probably triggered his inspiration for the painting in the first place. 
Fascinating scene really.
