I have been looking at your panorama and I feel each time more drawn into
it. As a geologist, I am fascinated by those volcanic dykes that criss-cross
the landscape. The absence of vegetation suggests to me a world from the
Precambrian, lets say a billion years ago, before the emergence of life. I
am not sure however, if then the sky was blue as there was no oxygen yet in
the atmosphere. And the haze strongly suggests a carbon dioxide-rich
atmosphere.

You mean no life on dry land but may be a lot underwater... blue algae and
cyanobacteriae could be at work for ages yet
But it is true that the atmosphere was not so oxygenated than after the
carbonifer era which fixed most of the carbon dioxid we are releasing back
now.
If I'm wrong, please correct me :-)

Yes indeed but procedural density or density files?

Yes, I stand corrected. Of course, I mean no life on dry ground! I was swept
along by the rethorics!
Indeed, the emergence of land plants was the main factor for the atmospheric
oxygen and a substantial lowering of carbon dioxide.

I think that's a great complement.. I think I've stumbled upon a good set of
world parameters this time around. I keep finding little subscenes that I
want to zoom into and render some more (working on one now, actually!) I
thought about the blue sky issue too, but hey I'll take some of that
artistic license ;)
I wonder about taking this Tierra code further, like perhaps a more
physically based simulation, that takes into account glaciers, and stuff...
its got me thinkin ;)

I'm not sure, but have a look at the Project Tierra source:
