This is one of the best renderings of a human head I've seen.  Looking 
through many 3d art sites (thanks to the links provided by Gilles), I 
was struck by how many of them had adopted this bizarre video-game 
sexy-mannequin female as a supposedly realistic ideal.  This is totally 
the opposite.  It captures the human quality so well.  If I knew more 
about art, I could probably identify why.  It might be the slight 
overbite, or the roundness to the jowls -- something.  But this is 
really remarkable.  And the textures and draping of the cloth is 
perfect.  Get this finished and turned in, please!

A few more like this, and the contest will have plenty of examples of 
what POVRay can do in the hands of artists.

This is probably ^why^ it's so much better than the commercial, canned 
POSER figures.

And when the contest is over, perhaps you can write a tutorial.  Many of

You're definitively right ! The girl on the painting was probably a servant
and maybe she was terrified by Vermeer. But when I look in her eyes for a
long time, I can see a sort of quiet force. Behind the appearances, for me,
she's stronger than we think. Perhaps, this is what I want to *paint*.

opportunity to model a period mirror with all its
flaws and imperfections, as well as a frame to
match the face.

Incredible. Certainly everything everyone has said is true, but I just want
to congratulate you on this: You were able to, instead of copying the
masterwork, pick out that element which spoke to you, and you made it your
own. Looking at the two next to each other, one gets a deeper sence of your
work, and of how you *see* the Vermeer. Truly, not only an excellent
digital rendering, but a work of art as well.

i wonder whats expected as adequate

my first reaction was 'oh my god, i'm going back to bed'
actually it was as above, but 'forget the bed bit'

my mother painted in just about anything and i wonder if i should try
and don't, because i'll know i'll fail

maybe i think with a computer it should be easier, it seems it isn't

maybe one day, i'll understand how to do a gravel path or a cloud

As  a sort of salute to your piece I went up to the Met today to check 
out the Vermeer's.  I'd thought there was a similar painting.  So I had 
a look at this one:

But the galleries the Vermeer's usually hang in are under construction 
and they had all the Flemish paintings in a different place.  This lead 
to the curious experience of seeing all the museum's Rembrandts hanging 
on a temporary wall colored the most saturated possible industrial blue. 
  Showed off the Rembrandt's subtle play of burnt sienna tones 
wonderfully...not

This is truly one of the most artistic renderings I've ever seen in this
