I increased the number of polygons, turned on double_illuminate, changed the
perspective, and this is what I got. There are still some unwanted black
edges, but it isn't anywhere near as bad as before. I think I'll go the
post-processing route as opposed to the tweak-every-setting-under-the-sun
route to remove them.

That's strange; double_illuminate should have completely removed the black
edges. Looks like it didn't do anything at all. Where did you put the
keyword? It should be something like

mesh2 {
// mesh data...
texture {...}
double_illuminate
}

Wow!
You may try moving the light up and to the left, it may reduce the 
black. A second light may also help.
