A little something I cooked up yesterday.

The star flare, BTW, is from a space object plugin that I'm writing.

Looks like a Viper Defender craft from Frontier Elite.

It looks good but maybe you could get the same effect with a lense
flare, don't know as I've never really played with them.

It's possible to get similar effects out of nkflare and Chris Colefax's
lens effects, but the whole reason that I'm writing another plugin is
because the existing lens flare plugins are more for background flares and
aren't very well suied to creating major features in high resolution
images.

A long time ago I wrote a small application to apply star effects to
bitmaps, called Novamatic (http://www.geocities.com/fcueto), and when I saw
your raytracing, I thought it would be cool to test it as a postprocessing
tool.
This is what I obtained and I want to share it with you.

By the way, I liked very much the "star tunnel" effect in your raytracing.
Good work!

Fernando

Very nice. Those look like shadow ships (brrrr)

How did you do the tunnel effect? media?

Hi Fernando,

IMHO the area between the light effect spikes should be merged/blended with
original picture. Right now it is too opaque?

The two spiky ship designs are similar, especially when viewed at a
distance, but are not exact copies of the Shadows' attack craft. Note that
the spines on my designs don't curve, for instance.

'Brrrr' is exactly the effect I wanted, although my creations are supposed
to be ruthless rather than evil.

It's a long cylinder textured with a function-based texture map which
blends a ridged multifractal pigment to rgbt 1.

My attempts to use media for largescale elements have been rather
disappointing, so I tend to rely on other methods.

The mood and color of this image are so nice that the lack of detail in the
front ship just kills me. Very good for a day's work, however. I really hope
you finish it.

I wasn't originally planning on making any more changes to the capital ship
for this scene. But, what kind of details were you looking for that you
didn't see?

I realize the ship doesn't have much of a sense of scale, but I'm not sure
what I can do about that without doing silly cliche things like putting
windows all over the hull...

I'm still working on it. :-)

Some structures in the dark parts of the edge would really help.
Of course panels will help with the scale as well. I think that very close
panels with a minimum amount of curve at the edges would give the appearance
of a large ship. This can be done quickly with a normal map.

I'm looking forward to updates.
