Hi everyone,

I'll start off with a bit of history about myself since it's my first
message on povray.org. I've been reading this newsgroup on and off for a
while now, but lately, it's become more regularly. Although this is my
first posted image, I was introduced to raytracing about 7 years ago when I
wrote a raytracer for my graphics course at University. So this is not my
first render.

Now about the image. I got inspired by all the sunshine media images and
decided to try one underwater. I'm still not happy with it yet because when
I get the sunbeams, the rest of my colours seem to washout. Also, there's
nothing breaking up the beams which makes them too constant.
The big picture is my first try at it, and the smaller one has sunbeams in
them (although they might not be very visible at that size). You'll notice
the difference in the colour of the sand and ball. I've been trying to find
the happy middle, but I haven't succeeded yet.

Fortunately, the fish look good from far, because if you saw them up close,
you'd laugh at how simple they are. The metallic sphere is just there for
looks and my attempt at a rust texture. I guess it fell off a boat.

So far, it's still kind of bare. I have some ideas of things to add when I
get the chance.

Any comments or suggestions?

Richard

I'd have to say that these are extremely cool pictures, especially if
you look at them as being *not* underwater but dry land images.

ahh... don't ask what I thought the fish were or could be, I never quite
seem to see things the same as other people.

above water or below water, the sand texture looks really nice. it seems
though that there is no water anywhere except above us.

I have seen plces where there is not much else but sand.
This seems to be a good depiction of such place.

Nice atmosphere, good colour. No need to put too much more into this.

Try narrow spotlight beams from above shining through your media.

Mick

I'll answer a few question in the same message.

Ross: Yes, I agree. At one point I couldn't convince myself that it was
underwater, especially before the fish came in.

Mick: The second picture does have a spotlight. You can sort of see the
outline where it suddenly gets darker. That's how I achieved the sunbeams.

Lt Kettch: I started with the media in Bob Hughes' sunshine image then
drifted from there. I forgot to give him credit (and the person who did the
initial one too - I don't remember his name). Although you probably won't
recognize the media anymore. So basically, the water is a plane with a
scattering media. There is also a ground fog so that the distance fades
out. The rest is all straight forward.

Hi Richard

Welcome to the group. Beautiful image. The sphere could maybe
do without the rust, but apart from that full marks.

Oh, that's rust... I thought it was a reflection of something.
The top is more realistic and the bottom more surreal, IMHO. You might try
adjusting the colors with the sunbeams to get the same colors as the top image.
