Well, here is the latest iteration in my quest to learn POV inside and
out :-)
This took ~ 15 hrs on my PIII 500. It uses the macros posted to the
binaries.scene-files news group. Thankyou all for your suggestions.
Please critique this. I can tell you that I am still not happy with the
random heights of the liquids, I have to work that out a bit, and
lighter colors..... and maybe better grout between the tiles (that was
a late night frustration addition...)

i really dig the large flasks. especially the color. My lab station never
looked this clean though! that's povray for you though...
I think it would be nice if the liquids in the test tubes were at higher
levels in a few more, like three or so back, in the left column. that area
looks kind of empty.

Probably because the pattern appears to match from tile to tile, as
though they were all carved out of one piece of stone and set back in
their original positions.
Maybe you should use a light colored wood or formica workbench with
assorted stains and a couple small burned spots.
Yes, a light colored plywood workbench with spatters and streaks of
green, yellow, and brownish red(about the color of dried blood), several
fairly large scorched areas, a couple pieces of broken glass and metal
shards lying around, and dings and dents covering a large portion of the
surface would be nice. Maybe even a couple roughly drilled holes. :-)
The glass is really nice, but I notice things seem to look brighter when
seen through it. This is most noticeable when you look through several
test tubes at a time. What is the color you are using for this? I would
suggest you use transmit of 0 and keep filter below 1 for most realistic
results. Also, there seem to be some dark areas in the tube stand, what
trace level did you use?

My research lab NEVER looked this clean! In part because you're missing
stains from the ammonium iodide contact explosive that I used to make and
put near the professors office doors.
Was it your intent for the tiles to look as though they are pieces of rubber
matting cut into squares and placed upon a marble lab bench top? I would
concur with the prior opinion that the tiles need to be less perfectly
regular and they need to be embedded in the table top with grout between
each tile. The grout edges should be somewhat irregular where they meet the
edges of the tiles.

Got a great start there anyhow. The part of the flasks where the cylinder meets
the sphere looks welded together. Not lathe or sor are they...?

I notice in real life that rows of tubes like this do seem to produce small
dark areas. I used a trace level of 18. I agree about the tiles, I would
like to use an isosurface to make them a bit more jagged etc.... but that is
for later :-)

Actually, NI3 is an implosive.... :-) (sorry, just being a smart ass...)
I knda wanted a rubber look to them, sorta my idea of the ideal lab, but I was
more concerned with the liquids and the glass. This is constantly being worked
on, so we shall see what the next iteration reveals !

No, I used a blob. I was trying for the irregular look that most round bottoms
have, especially from bad glass blowers. :-)
