two possibilities:

1.  white text object on a white plane, no lights, radiosity and then colors
inverted.

2. two text objects above a plane. One with ambient greater zero and
rendered with radiosity

No, this would lead to much brighter parts between the characters.

Nearly right, it's an intersection of a black text object and a high
ambient plane
above a diffuse finish plane.

Of course this is even slower than the proximity stuff.
