I added another small enhancement which allows the end of the portal to
be transformed from within the portal_pigment {} statement, and made a
pigment_map of two portal pigments to get this image. I animated a
slightly different version with the portal shifting from the chrome
sphere world to the purple world, the animation is available here
(again, as a QuickTime Movie):

There are three "worlds", each one is actually a union of it's objects
and light sources and a 1000-unit-radius sphere for the sky, I then
translate each world far enough that it is outside the spheres of the
other worlds. This technique lets me set up each individual world
centered around the origin and could be combined with declared
transformations to make managing the separate worlds quite easy. The
only restriction with this technique is that you can't use shadowless
lights, because they will affect objects in other worlds.
