Have never seen this before, it is a great idea/image.
I haven't used povray for ages :-( but I really used to enjoy trying to
reproduce an image (usually photographs) in povray using only CSG/code. I like
the challenge of turning just text into an image that if it goes well could fool
someone into thinking it was a photograph.

isn't that "thin rim" thing a white + sparkling wines (and brandy) thing, not
reds? (from one tea-total to another :-))

Both images are of high quality indeed.
I /am/ a wine drinker, but I just use a simple Duralex glass (those with
9 facets). I still have an average wine glass which gradually thins
towards the rim indeed, but starting from a slightly thicker base than
in the images, towards an identical thickness at the rim.

Very nice.
Now, a bit of nit picking...
It seems that your ior for the glass is to small, and that for the wine
to high.
In that image, the out of field environment is paramount. Try giving it
a slightly more contrasting gradient.

Yes, except the shadow of the wine itself is full black, there must be a ray
depth or absorption issue there, is there not? Otherwise would be my favorite!

I started this in a couple of facebook groups using a photoshop composite from
Design Inspiration in 2009. If you look at the original it's missing a
reflection of the wine and a few other tips to tell you it was 2D. Using POV-Ray
3.7 I have gone through several iterations including hard and soft shadows and
adjustments in the interior. The latest shown here uses ior.inc and photons.
