Gee, I haven't tightened a single screw on this beast for over 2 years 
now; I guess I ran out of steam right after the TC-RTC deadline back then.

Time to shovel in a little coal again. (It's a bloody pity though that I 
lost my Subversion database holding the version history of it all, as I 
just found out.)

subversion is a version control system (svn)

"Subversion" (aka SVN) is a free off-the-shelf versioning tool; no MySQL 
involved.
