I'm wondering if you shouldn't get out more often and meet real average
people :-)

No not really difficult. Take your time to read the documentation and try
the many example/demo files that come with the program. You will discover
the ease of POV-Ray.

Hm... the real difficulties will come later.... ;-)

A poor man's nightly render? Maybe we should all go to
bed with squared paper and a few colored pencils ;)

I need a pad of graph paper badly. Notebook paper only gets you so far.

Tom's right. But here's the good thing about it: Once you got the the
fundamental basics, it's up to you how difficult you make it :-)

I often throw it into conversations and generally get a blank look.
Only last week when I was buying a printer I asked about laptops, I need to buy
a new one (Does anyone have any recommendations, I would like light weight and
powerful, think Pov). When asked what I would use it for of course I replied
PovRay and Windoze office programs. She just politely said "Sorry, I've never
heard of it"

Oh! :-)
