You know it's going to be a good render when it takes five minutes just
for the mosaic preview to finish rendering! :-D
And lo, my motivation for making realistic-ish sand is revealed. Some of
you may recognize this thing from when I was last working on it 2-3
years ago. If not, good, because you won't remember how hideous it used
to be. ;-)
I really should just move on, but I just can't let this one go. I'm
happy to receive feedback, though I might not apply it at this point.
There are a few things in here (the creature and the thing it's
carrying, for one) that I know could *still* be improved, but I've been
at this for so long that I'm getting tired of playing with them.
I am still actively experimenting with the placement and composition of
this scene. The sand is still very much in progress (see previous thread).
Once I have those nailed down (and the sand render time gets under
control!) I want to go back and re-do the sunset version of this scene,
as well. (If you remember that, that means you've been reading this
group for at least three years. Congratulations.)
I'd also like to say that, while it has been a real pain to make SSS
that's compatible with radiosity, I think it really paid off in the
shadows on and around the creature in this shot.
The orange tinge just below the shadow does seem to be an artifact of
the two interacting, though. I'm not sure if I can get rid of it, but
it's subtle enough that I'm willing to live with it.
As people who have been following long enough know, I am absolutely
willing to listen to any feedback I get. :-)

Today's random quote is:
The 1003.1 document is written in such a way that both operating system
implementers and software writers can understand it, another novelty in
the standards world, although work is already underway to remedy this.

Ah! Nice to see this particlular image again :-) It came a long way from
those first scenes.
I think you probably would like to animate the curtains a bit more, but I
think I told you that already 2-3 years ago.... ;-)
I wonder if in this daylight scene, some more work on the sky would not be
worthwhile. In particular, to emphasize the alieness, you could subtly
change the hues, and add some flimsy high clouds.
