I think it looks like a painting because it has some
odd graininess to it, like the dark speckles. Also, the
ripples are a bit reminiscent to brush effects.

Is there a light source or just HDR and radiosity?

There is a light source (Sun) to make shadows more marked. With only the sky
and radiosity, the landscape is too washed out, so additionally, a black
screen is present behind the camera to block some of the luminosity coming
from the hidden part of the scene.

The dark speckle probably originate with low radiosity settings (testing).
Probably, in the final version, a finer aa will be necessary.

True. I think the effect could be obtained by other means too, for instance
with a high-resolution greyscale map drawn in a paint program. And surely
with the help of some functions? I am not good at that, but I can
imagine....

He he! Different ratio of course, and a finer rippling. Finer aa too.

One thing I forgot to do however, is change the aspect ratio of the camera.
The image looks more stretched now than in the original. Doesn't matter now,
but I shall correct it for future renders.

I don't know I think I like this image, with the stretched aspect ratio, better
:)

Excellent! Very convincing, even if the geology is a little modular!

The NFL should go international. I'd pay to
see the Detroit Lions vs the Roman Catholics.
